Heart Beat

Have you ever dreamed of driving in a strange town and losing your way?

Last week a friend was told to follow an ambulance to a distant hospital. A loved one was in the ambulance. On the way the driver lost sight of the ambulance in heavy traffic, and the car was low on gas. This was a very stressful sitiuation,to be sure. Unlike the dream, the gas station was found and directions to the hospital were given. When the hospital was sighted, a sigh relieved the tension.

A driver under abnormal stress is accident prone. The heart rate may double in stressful situations.Measurements of race drivers have shown rates of 180 beats per minute while on the track, dropping quickly to normal after the race. Aircraft pilots show a similar heart reaction to the stress preceding a landing.

Recently, I was "displeased" with my dentist during a root canal operation. After leaving the office I stopped at an intersection to make a left turn. While waiting for the light to change I put the transmission in neutral. I was still mad about my experience in the dentist's chair. The light changed to a left turn arrow. Without thinking, I put the shift lever in reverse, by mistake. Fortunately, the following car was not close and I stopped just before our bumpers met.

Fletch Safety Tip #8:

If you are stressed, wait until you "cool down" and have control of your emotions again or ask a friend to drive. Remember, when behind the wheel, you are accident prone if your heart is pounding. The life you save may be your own!
